Coins were first minted in 1979 and have been released sporadically since.

The Azadi has the same gold content as the British Sovereign, but is 0.900 fine rather than 22ct.

The Iranian 1 Azadi Gold Coin includes a representation of Ruhollah Khomeini, the Ayatollah who established the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The converse of the coin includes a mosque plan and calligraphic content perusing 'The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran' and 'Bahar Azadi'.
